The final match of the 2007/08 championship season turned out to be somewhat of an anti climax for us with a 3-2 defeat at Southampton although with results elsewhere going against us it would not have mattered in the slightest if we had got the three points at St Marys.
Scraping into the championship promotion play offs was always going to be a tall order for Kevin Blackwell so there is no disappointment really and we are in considerably better shape now than we were in August and I am reasonably confident about next seasons prospects.
The whole issue with West Ham, relegation and the subsequent legal proceedings probably did not help us this season as I felt we should have prepared for life in the championship immediately upon being relegated rather than hoping for a miracle return to the premiership via the courtroom.
The compensation matter will presumably be sorted out one way or another during the summer and not before time as the whole episode has gone on for way too long in fact I am not holding my breath about us actually getting any compensation at all.
As far as next season is concerned we already have the makings of a promotion challenging squad so if we can keep James Beattie and strengthen in one or two other areas which need not break the bank then we should be looking at a top four finish at least.
