Lack Of Midfield Creativity

The strikers and which partnership to go with is commanding some debate at present but the barren run in front of goal is as much to do with a lack of midfield creativity something that former managers Neil Warnock and Bryan Robson did not rectify.

Bearing in mind he was a legendary midfield player for both Man Utd and England the one thing I expected Robson to do was improve our midfield with both signings and coaching the players we already had but it never really happened.

The club never really replaced Michael Brown and Stuart McCall from years ago and with the loss in the summer of Phil Jagielka (although he did not always play in midfield) the options are even thinner.

Of the midfield players Robson signed Lee Hendrie has been a disappointment thus far Dave Carney is as much a full back as he is a wide midfielder and although loan signing Lee Martin has obvious potential he is not in any way the finished article and for a rumoured £2 million transfer fee there may be better options elsewhere although with the departure of Bryan Robson who was instrumental in his arrival Martin may not want to make the move permanent any more.

The signing of Gary Speed from Bolton a player of undoubted quality was on paper at least a step in the right direction however I wonder if at his age he can adjust to the hustle and bustle of the championship because at times since his arrival he has looked somewhat off the pace of the game.

There are midfield players out there of sufficient quality to improve this team but for some reason we seem incapable or unwilling to bring them in whatever happens between now and the end of the season it is surely time for some investment and a change of personnel in midfield.
